Counselor's Corner

Counselor Corner

My name is Shelley Carlson, and I am your school counselor at Skyline North Elementary. This is my sixth year at Skyline, and I am excited to continue serving and working with students and families of Skyline!

Why Elementary School Counseling?

School counseling services are provided to all students in Barstow Unified School District as part of their educational curriculum to help them succeed in their social and emotional development, academic achievement, and assist with developing goals and career interests.

What does a school counselor do?

At Skyline I provide monthly classroom lessons, small group counseling, short-term individual counseling, consultation with parents and school staff, and community resource referrals. Topics I discuss with students during classroom lessons and short-term counseling include friendship, setting goals, team work, bullying, being responsible, how to manage strong feelings, conflict resolution, study skills, and concerns at school.

Confidentiality and your student’s and family’s privacy are important to me. What you and your child discuss with me is private except in cases required by law (when abuse or harm to self or others are suspected).

How does a student meet with a school counselor?

Students may be referred to specific counseling services by the principal, their teacher, other school staff members, from you as a parent/guardian, or self-referral. You can reach me by phone, email, or make a request with a Skyline staff member. *If you do not wish for your student to speak to the counselor you must have a meeting with Dr. McDonald, our principal, to explain why.

Please feel free to contact me if you have any questions or concerns. I am looking forward to a wonderful year at Skyline with you and your student(s)!
